...for my daughter. I showed her how to turn the gas on, and I went on my ride. She greeted me upon my return with a perfect medium steak.

I opened this bottle that she picked for me on Sunday.

It’s light and fruity. Not as complex as a Bordeaux or anything simulating one. Very good for under $10.

When she’s on, she’s really on. Almost worth all the work!

It’s nice that she likes to cook!

She has taken real pride in it.  My Italian family has always thought of cooking as a basic skill, and we all learned to do it as kids along with tying our shoes.  I tried to make cooking fun with my daughter growing up, and I am delighted and so proud that my parenting took root.  Hence, this post. :D

My kid (undoubtedly older than yours and we haven’t been in the same country as one another   in five months ) texted me pictures of some grass fed local steaks and a marinade recipe he was trying last night, and then the taste results after grilling them today. It’s great. You’re teaching your kid a great life skill and a hobby you can share forever.

As for 14 Hands: I’m sure the single-varietal stuff is good at the price, especially the cab—it’s grown on pretty decent real estate — but be careful with the blends , which in my experience taste like cafeteria grape juice. I’m definitely not a label snob and I pretty much live on grilled meats and veg with < $20  wine, but somebody in Mrs. RPM’s “ book club” (i.e. wine and gossip club) always brings one of those blends over and nobody drinks it so I invariably find myself tasting it and recoiling, then deglazing a pan with it, and then pouring the last of it out.

Avoiding disappointments like that is one of the reasons I never pick up a new experiment for more than $10. If it turns out to be cooking wine, I’m not out that much money. I like to find stuff that hits above its price class, even if it’s not objectively best in show, hence my affinity for “two buck Chuck” (which is now three bucks, but whatever). Thanks for the warning about the blended 14 hands.

I’m finding it harder and harder being far from my family as I get older.  It didn’t seem like a problem when I was younger, but now I miss being less than a day’s drive from them.  Thank goodness for technology that lets us connect.  My sister and I text almost daily, and my brother called me yesterday while I was on my ride.  It helps.

Reasonable approach! My partner and kid are in a different country with closed borders at the moment, and I don’t know when that will change —totally safe and healthy , but it definitely bothers me some. My sister is just a couple of states away, which doesn’t seem so far.

I’m still planning the road trip to Indy this summer, so I have that to look forward to.  That’s when we’ll bury Mom’s ashes.
